Web Hosting
I often want hosting where someone else is managing the server. I get tired of managing servers.
For this extra hosting, I’ve been using Bluehost for a long time. They were the closest thing I could find to a perfect hosting account.
The only problem I had with them is that they only allow 5 addon domains per account.
So, today I went looking for another hosting account that allows me to host unlimited domains on that one account.
I already have accounts with Dreamhost and HostGator. They’re good so far, but only because I need lots of accounts with different class-c IP addresses.
Then I found HostMonster.
For some reason the site looked too familiar to me so I called them to find out who owns them. It turns out that HostMonster is owned by Matt Heaton, the same guy who owns BlueHost.
And, HostMonster has everything I’ve looked for in a hosting package:
- host unlimited domains with one account
- ssh access
- cpanel
- cheap
- good tech support
- good affiliate program
Needless to say, I’m super happy with HostMonster.
I just wish the guys at bluehost would have told me that hostmonster existed one of the 10 times I’ve asked for all these features over the past year.

I once heard Matt Heaton talk about HostMonster before it was live and assumed he would announce it eventually. I even asked about it many times when I’d call into Bluehost. (They knew about it but didn’t know when it would launch.) Your blog post was the first indication I’ve had that it finally launched! I’m excited to use it.
Hi
I’ve been reading your posts for several days now…..I found you through writingup.com. I’m still trying to learn all this stuff…
Anyway, re your hosting suggestions. I’m once again searching for a new hosting for the dozen or so sites I have and host. My current host is losing all my email again .
So I checked out BlueHost and Hostmonster (same thing) and you have to call them to get any answers….
So you also suggested Hostgator…I wasn’t sure about them….
So I’m wondering whether I should switch to one of the first 2….problem is, one(only) of my clients actually logs into their CPanel account….the others don’t care. Do you think I could still use BlueHost?

IMO, it’s great that you have to call BlueHost/HostMonster to get answers. They’re always really quick to answer the phone and they always have answers. I’ve never had a problem.
I’m not sure why you wouldn’t be able to use one of them for your hosting. You have a client who logs into cpanel? I would suggest getting a bluehost account and put that guys stuff on that account, along with a few other people’s accounts who don’t check their stuff.
Then, also get a hostmonster account for everything else you do. That way, the guy who logs in has limited access to your stuff.
I have been super happy with hostmonster so far.

Thanks for your posts- I have been searching for a new host, and wanted independant confirmationo they were what they said. A real voice in tech support answered at 11PM tonight (Sunday) on the third ring.
I’ve sent a link to my geek, and with his approval of their bells and whistles, I’ll be signing up tomorrow. Seeing the dates of your posts made me feel on top of things – I’d been looking for a _good_ new unlimited addon host without success until tonight.
Cheers-
Bruce
I’m not having so much luck with the so called unlimited services of hostmonster. Preceeded by a bunch of minor irritations I have just encountered a deal breaker. The 7 email accounts I set up to use imap had random problems sending emails. Next my website started to break randomly when it involved running a PHP script or Flash. Turns out the problem is that they put a total limit of 20 processes on an account. This means that while my email is running there is a fair chance that my websites won’t work!!! WTF.. I was told it was because I was using imap. I changed over to hostmonster specifically because they provide imap service. I spent a lot of time porting my websites over to their configuration and was happy to do so if I achieved my aims in the end. Their response to the process limit problem, we’ll give you a refund. Great.. weeks of work for nothing. I’m afraid that my overall impression is of a few guys who set up a linux box in their bedroom.
