Tools I use: Speed up online videos

You know how people have been creating these 45 minute marketing videos recently.

No more!

speed up online video

Install, watch video, make it play faster.

Who knows why people think a 30 minute video of just them talking is appropriate.

You get 10 minutes…MAX…to hold someone’s attention.

UPDATE (11/14/2008): I’m totally addicted. I love that I can watch/listen to an online video in 2x speed. It cuts through all the crap so much faster.

[...] So, this video is a bit longer than I said yesterday was acceptable, but I think you’ll find it interesting. If not, you can always watch it at 2x normal speed! [...]

John,

Thanks for the great link!

I always use variable speed in Microsoft Media Player to speed up audio presentations so I can listen to a webinar replay in half the time, and there is the occasional type of video that Media Player can speedup, but I’ve been wishing I had something to speed up Flash playback.

It’s also going to be a big help for use with a couple of online classes I’m taking from USU.

How To Speed Up Online Videos @ 5:18 pm

[...] Well, today I got an email from John Jonas about how to Speed up online videos. [...]

Ron Bertino @ 7:10 pm

Great tip. Thanks.

If you’ve got downloaded video content, then use the great (free) GOM media player, which also allows you to modify the video playback speed.

Thanks for the tip John. This is awesome. It even lets me blow through commercials when I’m watching Office episodes on Hulu :)

Thank You!

I’ve been waiting for something like this to come around.

Damian @ 8:42 pm

Thanks Jon this is a brilliant tool. I hate all these bloody videos that I need to sit down for 45 minutes to watch.

@Jeff

VLC Media player will play and speed up flash .flv video files and a ton of other formats.

It’s free at: http://www.videolan.org

Just use the + and – keys on your numeric keyboard to speedup and slowdown.

Hi Jon, I love the idea as I find 3 mins is about my maximum for watching time and I’m very conscious of keeping my own videos short and snappy.

But this tool costs $29.99 minimum – I’m wondering if there aren’t any tools out there that do the same job but are free – perhaps you could get one of your excellent staff on the Philippines onto the research and save us money as well as time.

Perhaps it’s a matter of time before Youtube build this into the site.

Best wishes
Heather

I’m a fan of VLC Media Player – if you set the tempo correction flag in the settings, you can speed up video w/o turning people into sounding like chipmunks which makes it much easier to listen to any media file (video or audio) faster.

Anybody know if these above media speeder-uppers will export the faster file? like speeding up an audio file, than exporting that fast playback to mp3 so I can put in on my iPod or burn it to a cd to listen to fast in the car?

???

Hi John,

MySpeed is a GREAT tool. I’ve owned it for about 6 months. It saves me SO much time. It’s amazing that they can speed up the video without the “Chipmunk” affect on the voice quality. It simply sounds like the person is talking faster and is VERY easy to understand.

I have been looking for soooo long to find some good info on this topic. I have been hosting my videos on Amazon AzS3 and have been having challenges with speed. Have taken a lot away from here. Good stuff.

Considering I watch at least 6 hrs of video (now about 3 thanks to you) I now have a bit more time to conduct other aspects of my business…..I am kicking myself though for not trying to find a solution to a problem i didn't know i had until you came up with it…..good job

Keep up the sterling work, I'm a follower

I had he same issue so I created FasterAudio which create new accelerated MP3 files at up to 400% of slow boring regular speed for speed-listening on my portable Mp3 players.

VLC.org has a free video player that I've been using for years. Will speed up video AND audio up to 4 times as fast. At that rate you can't understand it. But with practice you can get used to 2.5 times the speed. It also depends on the speaker. If you've got a slow speaker, you can crank it up to 3.5 speed and zip through his presentation easily.

As I said, this baby is free and it works wonders. There's a Mac and a Windows version. You can go to VLC.org or download it here. http://www.vlcmediaplayer-new.info/yax1.html

I don't think anyone needs to pay $29.95 for the player John mentions. (No offense intended). Once you get your hands on the free VLC you'll see what I mean. Save your money.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here. Yes VLC and GOM are free ways to speed up the playback of video files already on your hard drive. What MySpeed does is speed up the playback of online, streaming videos.

That's a brilliant tool – cant tell you how much time gets sucked up by videos teaching you stuff when your dying to just crack on and take action. Thanks!

Awesome find John! I had a bunch of training videos to watch today and you just cut that work load in half. I love all of the suggestions you send so please keep them coming!

John,

I have to admit that I have always wanted to do this. I am always looking to be more efficient with the limited time I have. I hate when people fill their videos with 90% fluff and 10% meat. I wish they would just get to the good stuff and get it over with. They would be doing us all a favor. This tool looks like a winner.

Project Manager @ 8:32 am

I,ve been using enounce for a couple of months now – it rocks! I can't bear to watch online video without it. It's a great time saver.

Sally @ 4:12 pm

I've been using this great tool for almost a year now. I love it.
