Tools I Use: Wordpress

Wordpress is awesome. If you’re not using it to build your websites, what are you thinking?

So, this video is a bit longer than I said yesterday was acceptable, but I think you’ll find it interesting. If not, you can always watch it at 2x normal speed!

Get Flash to see this player.

I met Matt at Wordcamp Utah back in September.

Here’s where you can find Jeff’s outsourcing workshop and his monthly outsourcing coaching as well as his free ebook on outsourcing.

The websites I show in this are:

My point of this is to help you realize that you can make wordpress do anything. I think it’s worth spending a few hours of your time looking at the wordpress plugins, wordpress themes, and looking at the options inside your wordpress website and configuring it to do the things you want it to do. I think that time will pay off over and over again over the years as you use Wordpress to build different websites. It’s amazing how much easier your business becomes when you know you can make your website do whatever you want without having a webmaster or a programmer to do it.

Kang @ 1:40 am

Great tip!

A headsup though; it doesn’t work for Chrome.

I switch between Chrome and Firefox pretty frequently so it’s not such a big problem for me :)

Kang @ 2:05 am

Hey John,

Where do we get salesletter themes from?

I had one some time ago but have since reverted to using html for those.

Might consider switching back because what you said does make sense; there’s simply no advantage of html over wordpress, and wordpress blogs get indexed so much faster.

One request!

Can you do a video about your ABSOLUTELY kewl multiple monitor setup behind?

I’ve been wanting to do a dual monitor but have no idea how much it’s going to benefit me.

I tried it for a day or so previously but it seems like I’ve gotten too used to windows-d-ing and always end up clearing BOTH my desktops.

Would be really interesting to see how you use them! :D

Derek @ 7:23 pm

Hi John,
You mentioned Semiologic as the theme you use for your blog. Is that the basic (free) one or their pro version that you are using? I’ve been using Semio free theme for a while but would be interested to hear your opinion about all the plug-ins and features of the paid version, based on your experience.
Thanks.

11/20/2008

John @ 3:31 pm

@Derek
I use Semiologic Pro. I couldn’t tell you a difference between the pro/free versions because I’ve never used the free version. I’ve been using the paid version for a few years and have never even looked at the difference. My guess is that you can find everything that’s in the paid version for free in different places online…but I’m not sure about that.
John

Gobala Krishnan @ 3:51 pm

Yeah I use Wordpress all the time too, unless its a membership site or a salesletter type of site, for which I feel there are much better solutions.

"Simon Net Guru" @ 4:19 am

Great John,

How do you put the video on your website like this?

Also how do I use Cheap Web Masters?

John @ 12:06 pm

@Simon – I use the mediacaster plugin for wordpress to put the videos on the site (although…now I just send the videos to one of my guys in the Philippines and he does it for me)

Here’s where you’ll find cheap web masters. I’ve never found anything better.

John

Traci Moore @ 10:39 pm

Thanks for the tip on MySpeed this is a really great tool and I am amazed at how slow everything seems when you slow it down.

I agree that wordpress can make some nice looking sites but finding themes can be a pain. I search for themes and think I have found the perfect one only to find out it does not work correctly after I install it. :(

3/24/2009

Dan @ 6:38 pm

I used it with Chrome, no problems.

8/22/2009

Charles Pisano @ 8:22 pm

MiLady Carol @ 3:20 pm

John,

I’m George Tran’s wife. I just finished watching this video and have downloaded some additional tools for my blog. Thank you. I’ve been using WP for my http://greentealady blog and I was interested in using it for my jewelry site, http://miladycarol.com. I’ve been unable to find a way to organize my photo-heavy pages so the pictures don’t crowd and move the text in odd ways. I don’t know how to code, so I’d need a theme that is very malleable. Do you have any suggestions?

Peace,

MiLady Carol

Just go to source code and you will see that John is using WP Semiologic, as he said in his video.

Sid @ 8:26 am

Blogger is much faster and does amazing things too. There are lots of free templates available on the net, just google “free blogger templates” I can register a domain name and set up a monetized website with lots of gadgets in a half hour. I can make changes (such as add or remove posts, html widgets) to 25-30 websites in an hour or so. Can you match my speed on WordPress? PLUS if you set it up right (takes 2 minutes) Google pays for hosting. I like that.

11/6/2009

steve @ 7:45 am

well, sid, love to hear how you get free blog hosting?

2/9/2010

scott penton @ 1:01 am

Good information, there's also a wordpress plug-in for Woopra, just copy/past your woopra api key into the settings menu after you download and then upload the plugin to you blog, super easy and a good way to track your visitors. My most of my sites are wordpress sites as well, http://jetsett.in

Caroline @ 3:05 am

How do you send your video to your guys in the Phillipines for them to post? I do a video blog and want my guy to post it all for me.

2/25/2010

johnjonas @ 4:53 pm

Here's where you can get my outsourcing tips.

Arthur @ 4:26 am

The one thing that bothers me about word press is the constant updating it requires. You need to make sure all of your sites are up to date because a lot of the updates are security patches. It's not fun when you have a hacked site, I have had a couple. That said, 90% of my sites are Wordpress because its just so dang easy.

3/4/2010

Ian Richardson @ 2:37 am

I've been using and installing WP blogs for all my clients.

I'm also joining ReplaceMyself within the next week to start outsourcing a bulk section of the work I do.

Question.

Why have you, and how did you set up all the screens in the background?

Thanks John, keep them coming.

5/9/2010

yogiwan @ 11:23 pm

I have word press deployed for several sites but have not figured out how to integrate a shopping cart. I use Ultra Cart for my primary business site but am spinning off minisites. I would like to have these integrate into the cart as it does inventory management, accounting and billing and a few other things. Have some suggestions for this integration?

Claude @ 9:11 pm

John, Great video! I too use wordpress for the majority of my sites. One thing though, when you mentioned that everyone probably has fantastico and they could scroll down to the bottom of the control panel and install it with one click– i'd like to point out anyone using a backward host like 1&1 won't have that. They may need to switch hosting. But it's so worth it!

Exequiel @ 8:07 pm

Hi John, Thank you for your effort to make these valuable information for us. However, I used wordpress in my site (mondexprofessionals.com) before but it was suspended because I think I made links to like this.. http://www.traffic-jockey.com. I want to promote this site using wordpress, could you please help me with this? Thanks. God Bless..

Sally @ 4:13 pm

I build my websites almost exclusively in Wordpress. It is the perfect CMS platform for SEO.
