My Favorite Firefox Plugins

Since most of the people who read my blog spend a good amount of their time in front of the computer, I thought I’d share some of the plugins I use to boost my productivity.

This post is inspired because of my latest favorite: LastPass.

I’ve always looked for a great solution to storing usernames/passwords but haven’t found it. I’ve tried keepass, roboform, and the built-in firefox password manager, all with very little success (they didn’t work to my liking).

Now, with lastpass, it stores all the passwords from all of my computers (AND MY BLACKBERRY!!!!).
It also tells me when it has user/pass info for me, something other systems didn’t always do.

Yes, it stores my passwords online, and yes, I’m probably giving up a bit of security with it (although, they don’t seem to think so), but I’m fine with that from the peace of mind I get by knowing I’m always going to be able to get back into the site.

Here are my other favorites:

  • Faviconize – I keep lots of tabs open all the time. Now, those tabs are smaller.
  • Session manager – because I HATE when I accidentally lose the 15 tabs open in my browser.
  • S3 Organizer – because it makes it super easy to put stuff onto S3. I don’t even have to open a new program!
  • Delicious – because keeping my bookmarks online and synced is priceless
  • LivePageRank – because I like to know what the PageRank is for sites, but I don’t need an entire google toolbar to tell me.
  • Multifox – because I’m tired of having to log my wife out of my laptop because she likes to use whichever one is closer to her!

I’d love to hear what plugins you love that make you more productive in your business.

Real Estate Investor @ 3:15 pm

Hi John-
Always open your emails. They’re not full of garbage and then a sale at the end. Well some of them are but I probably buy your recommended crap anyway coz it’s good.
Anyways, back to plugins.
Some of my favs:
FoxyProxy
SEOInfo
SearchAsk(withvideodownloader)
dapper for firefox

I also have most of the ones you favor. However, I’ll have to look into LastPass.

Great info,
I’ve got a few of the plugins that you mentioned and will alos check out lastpass because I’m like you with the password managers.
You’ve got to try out ubiquity.
Also dont forget foxmarks (now X marks)and firebug.

Greg

Dustin @ 3:49 pm

I prefer SearchStatus over LivePageRank because is shows PageRank and Alexa, plus some other cool tools. Here are some others I find useful – maybe not essential: Autofill Forms, Download Statusbar, Google Preview, PDF Download, and of course Adblock :)

And as a developer I find these especially useful: Colorzilla, Firebug, Html Validator, Web Developer

Richard @ 4:03 pm

I use NoScript.

Peter @ 4:05 pm

I use xmarks in stead of Lastpass because it combines bookmarks and passwords and a lot of options.
Besides those already mentioned, i have Cooliris, forecastfox, noscript and better gmail 2

Have a great day ! Life is GOOD !
Peter

Pete @ 4:50 pm

I love the FIREFTP plugin that gives a great FTP facility that saves opening another program. Thanks for the share!

Zeth @ 5:06 pm

Jonas, you must be crazy. Are you serious? Storing login info. online? You must be joking.

IdiotBuster @ 5:41 pm

@Zeth i agree

WTF!!!???

Totally LOVING “TwitterFox” right now… It places a little “T” on my status bar so I can see what people are tweeting and if I don’t look manually I have it set so that every 20 minutes it pops up a little box and shows me what’s going on! Been able to catch some really cool deals with this plugin.

Phil Parks @ 7:22 pm

I use IE Tab, NoScript, RSS Ticker and SearchStatus. I used to use others but have consolidated to these. Have used AI Roboform in the past but might check out LastPass. Just a bit concerned about storing passwords online.

Welly Mulia @ 8:20 pm

Thanks for sharing the tools John.

Just installed the Faviconize plugin and will seriously consider lastpass as well to make password retrieval much easier :)

Awesome!
Welly Mulia

Marian @ 11:35 pm

Roboform is incredible.

As for Firefox, I use Rank Checker and SEO4Firefox, both are so great.

Mostafa @ 1:15 am

I use a few plugins. that make life easier. Faviconize!I’ll try that one looks good.

BR, Mostafa

Mark Thompson @ 2:06 am

John,

I used to use s3 orgnizer but switched to ezs3.com. There is no going back, yes it’s a premium service but it has enabled me to increase my video production 5 fold. plus you can give separate logins to staff

Max @ 10:15 am

I love Last Pass… I regret the time I’ve wasted without such a program. I don’t worry about storing my passwords encrypted online. I’d worry more about storing them on my PC in my browser. That’s why I got Last Pass in the first place.

Here are a few other good plugins:
-KwiClick (various cool functions)
-Delicious (of course)
-gTranslate (right-click and translate to English)
-SEO for Firefox
-Better GReader (makes google reader better)
-TwitBin (good in-browser twitter client)
-PPCWebSpy (addictive keyword spy tool) http://onwave.com/ppcwebspy

These are just a few. I’m on my friend’s PC now, so I can’t remember the rest. Also, I use Flock Browser instead of Firefox, but that’s just for the blogging/media tools it has.

4/23/2009

John @ 2:24 pm

@Zeth and @IdiotBuster – Yes, I store the login info online. I know the risks. I think the reward is greater than the risks.

It’s basically the same as using mint.com or quicken.com. You’re giving them info that could potentially hurt you. The benefits for me out way that risk.

John

Chris @ 6:40 pm

Searchstatus. Alexa, compete, and page rank displays clean and quiet in your status bar. also has some other tools like link reporting and “show in archive.org.”

5/11/2009

Randy @ 3:53 pm

If you’re a Mac user needing password managment, I strongly recommend 1Password (http://agilewebsolutions.com/products/1Password). And it works on the iPhone, too.

8/1/2009

C W P @ 2:34 pm

Firebug. coz the page means nothing if you cant read the code behind it :)

plus some download tools too.

however, I’d take Chrome for raw surf speed any time.
FF sucks @ Javascript execution

8/29/2009

Larry Killmer @ 11:05 am

I have tried the Roboform and it was more headaches than it was worth. I will definetly try a few of these plugins to maximize my personal production.
Thanks

JonM @ 1:19 pm

I’ll put a big vote forward for *Tree Style Tab* – it gives you vertical tabs, which is incredibly useful if you’re a heavy tab user. On a widescreen monitor, the benefits are numerous, since you can display many more tabs at once than having to scroll horizontally or mess with multi-row tabs.

Furthermore, you can collapse/expand tabs into groups, dynamically resize the width of the vertical tabs, and it works hand-in-hand with Tab Mix Plus.

If more people knew about and used vertical tabs, it’d be a default feature in web browsers, not unlike how tabbed browsing is a common standard today! Wholly recommended and I <3 hearing from people who’ve “gone vertical” and reaped the awesome benefits.

Call me paranoid but I am leery of storing anything online that I don’t also have a copy of offline. Especially with the Senate bill that Rockefeller and Snowe have introduced to be able to shut down the internet at the government’s whim. As Senator John “Jay” Rockefeller, D-WV said, “I think that it would have been better if the internet had never been invented.” Yeah, right, specially for his family and his Federal Reserve buddies.

WannaBeGeekster @ 6:09 pm

As long as you don’t store your bank passwords in there, you should be alright. Problem is now people only have to guess one password to get all of your passwords! Seriously though, it sounds pretty sweet. Right now I am trying to setup a virtual desktop. So I can get to anything I need on any of my 6 different computers…

harry @ 6:41 pm

I also like;
Tab URL Copier (copies the URL’s of all open tabs);
and
Colorful Tabs (makes your tabs different colors, so they are easier to distinguish between each one),
ohhh, and for all us ADHD folks that open and close tabs so often we forget where we were, History SubMenu’s – keeps track of tabs you’ve closed.

Peter @ 6:39 am

I like PPC Web Spy and SEO Quake and use them alongside Micro niche finder and the google wonder wheel

Chad Wilgus @ 9:21 pm

Thanks this will help keep my Afiliate CPA business better organized.

I prefer diigo over delicious.

Mike

Rob @ 2:24 pm

Great Information. Thanks for this.

9/23/2009

Beachbody @ 8:57 am

I definatly prefer firefox over ie, great post!

10/29/2009

Jack @ 10:11 am

I’m a bit leary of LastPass, while it’s great when all is good, what’s going to happen to all your passwords if the company goes bust?

11/6/2009

Jeromy @ 12:28 pm

Great arsinal!

I use a few of these too as well as a couple others.
Download themAll
FIrebug
Grease Monkey
FIreshot and,
Affiliate Espionage (paid).

I have been getting increasing pressure to switch over to Google Crome. However, still using firefox. Anyone have any thoughts on if Firefox is still the best browser? I am still liking it but see some pretty nice features with Crome. Big question though is, would all these great plugins be available?

I am mostly ok with LastPass, but it is a bit uncomfortable to have that sort of info stored somewhere else, even though it should be pretty secure.

Cheers!

Kenneth Banks @ 10:33 pm

Thanks for this, i’m totally with you on the LastPass. Been using it for a while and really depend on it.

Ali AlKaff @ 12:19 am

Try Mozilla’s own Weave as a password, session, bookmark, history and preferences manager. It syncs all that across all your Firefox installations.

Ginger Coleen @ 1:20 am

Been using Roboform for many years.

Apparently you didn’t know about Roboform ToGo. I carry it on a flash drive and can use Roboform on any PC, anywhere as long as it has a USB connection. Once you pull the flash drive out, it completely erases any traces that you were there. I think it just runs in memory. And, of course, if you make changes, you just sync them with your primary PC.

Pretty cool stuff.

1/1/2010

Anthony @ 5:50 pm

I haven’t any problems with Roboform and you can sync it online with a click of a button and I can carry it with me on a USB stick.

I do believe you have to be smart with whatever password manager you use, and not store sensitive information on there.

Thank for the plugins John.

1/14/2010

bizzniz @ 9:59 pm

I use http://www.evernote.com/ and gogle translate

To Everyone Re: LastPass – OK, I understand the paranoia about storing info online. So here is a suggestion that involves archaic methodology:
1. Enter all of the sites that DO NOT require CC information or NO BANK information into last pass
2. When you have done that, go into lastpass and print off or save to your desktop your password sheet, and do this every time you add websites/passwords. It's like doing one extra step to back up your data – you do back up your data right?
3. Viola – Done!!
4. NEVER, EVER store your bank info online, anywhere for any reason, if you have done this, change your bank log in info every 3-weeks, You do change your passwords at the bank right?

Although Roboform took a little getting used to, I now love it. The main reason I chose it over other plugins is because of the security. It prevents keyloggers and spyware from stealing my passwords, and also protects me if my laptop gets stolen or something. All the passwords are stored in an encrypted file.

Also, I don't like to use the same password for all my site logins. I'll use the Generate Password button to create a unique, strong password for the sites that I care about. This is especially useful for all our Wordpress sites. If someone managed to get one of my passwords, they wouldn't be able to take over my whole life online.

Also, because of Roboform's security, I feel comfortable saving my credit card info with it too. So making purchases online is much more convenient. I don't have to hunt down my credit card info everytime.

Anyway, I love it. I'm glad that there are free alternatives to refer folks to. But after going through an identity theft a few years ago, I prefer to go with the most secure option.

For convenience, here's a link:

Here's the naked link if you prefer:

scott penton @ 6:42 am

I just downloaded SEOquake you might want to try, and of course Stumbleupon & Delicious are my two fav's.

3/9/2010

Bev @ 10:28 am

A very simple info storer which does not store online but is always accessible and is free is keepass.com – it is used in co-ordination with a usb plug in and you can take it anywhere you go but you cannot use the usb without keepass and you cannot use keepass without the usb so double security. It is very simple but won't do the reminder things etc but I have found it very reliable for keeping main data details.
Will check out some of your other recommendations John. I also find FF abominable – freezes, drops out – chrome is much better but some programs don't recognise it yet.
Outsourcing going well John – thanks heaps.

JJ…

Take a look at Read-It-Later a great tool for scanning the web and getting back to what you like.

Also, I like Scrapbook…check it out, you'll be surprised.

Thanks for a "peek" at what you use and for the great comments everyone has given.

Saved me a lot of money last year and this is is going sky rocket

Kristal @ 3:13 am

If you want to feel better in 15 minutes just take a test at http://www.LabBocaRaton.com.

Steven Brough @ 5:22 am

Thanks John

I am always on the lookout for new Firefox plugins, I don't actually use it for general surfing, I use Chrome, what I do use Firefox for is my secret weapon for finding out what is going on behind the scenes.

Steven

Luis @ 8:36 am

Hi John,
Nice post, I use RoboForm insteat of LastPass to keep all my passwords. A new feature I am using a lot is robo form online. When you are out and about or using a friend's computer you just need to drag and drop the online version and voila! all your login pass and notes are there and they still protected!
Have a look and let me know what you think!

4/28/2010

You will never know @ 12:04 am

The productivity gains offset the privacy risk in my opinion and limited experience. Especially if you have the right protections in place.

5/6/2010

SEO Consultants @ 3:17 pm

Very cool, thanks for the list. Have some of them, but will now get the rest of them.

5/7/2010

Web Marketing Expert @ 1:35 am

LOve this info! thanks to everyone for sharing.
I am away presently and my productivity has halved because I don't have access to all
of my firefox plugins!
I love to see all of my lovely sites popup when I open my browser like t.v.s saying 'pick me'!
Can't remember which plugin that is.
Now you have confused me – I am considering roboform but will look at others now.
thanks again!

Herms @ 9:28 pm

John, just wondering, what if I needed to get a simple web site done but needed to use a programmer; a graphic designer and a copywriter – would I be paying them $300 pm individually. or would I be paying $300 pm to get all-in-one services.

5/24/2010

Alf @ 2:41 pm

Hi John, I use 1password and that is SUPER secure….since whom would want their Passwords Floating around out there.

It also sits locally on my computer and has a really high encryption rate.

Yes, you pay for it, but when it comes to MY passwords as inhttp://www.1Password.com I don't mess around ;-)

I use it for my companyhttp://www.RipCard.com that requires a secure login since I deal in Referrals and such.

Alf Marcussen

We help you get Referrals, EVEN when you don't ask for them.

Great post!

The two Add-ons that I value the most are:

searchPreview – adds small thumbnails of the site in the search result in Google
Web Develper – when activated it can show you div's css etc etc Great when I'm digging around in the code.

Ohhh and I also use Roboform and I love it.

Thanks
